Construction of our facility began in May 1965. Initial production started that September and was up to full-scale manufacturing by the end of the year. At that time, we were a subsidiary of The Columbia Mills Incorporated, of Syracuse, New York. The U.S. company had been in business since 1896 and enjoyed significant Canadian sales. The decision to open a company in Canada was an expression of Columbia’s confidence in the Canadian economy and desire to provide the best possible service to its Canadian customers. The goal was to provide excellence in the quality of our products and services. The company grew from a very small manufacturer of coated fabrics for the domestic market to a company of international stature in the North American and European markets. This was a result of commitment to quality, technological innovation and determination to attain greater levels of efficiency.

Columbia Finishing Mills was sold to The Lincoln Group in June 1987. The Lincoln Group was established in early 1986 as the holding company for acquisitions and start-up ventures in technologies related to specialty coatings. The strategy that the Lincoln Group employed was to acquire mature, profitable, well-run companies with significant market share in related markets. A solid foundation would then enable LGH to develop and market new products utilizing existing facilities, technologies and personnel. The objective of LGH was to improve production efficiencies in its manufacturing plants to take full advantage of the niche that it enjoys in the capital intensive market in which it operates.

We wanted to continue to be a major supplier to the Canadian market, however, like many Canadian manufacturers faced with high costs and a downturn in the economy, a tough decision was required. In 1991, we ceased manufacturing and removed our coating equipment but our converting equipment remained. We became a converter / distributor. Our primary suppliers were the related companies owned by LGH. Most products were stocked in jumbo rolls for quick turnaround of orders.
